Sherine Gabriel
Dr. Gabriel earned a Doctor of Medicine degree, with distinction, from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada in 1982 and completed Internal Medicine Residency and Rheumatology fellowship at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1988. She earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from McMaster University in 1990. Dr. Gabriel is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology.
Dr. Gabriel’s research has made important contributions to our understanding of the risks, determinants, and outcomes of the rheumatic diseases and has resulted in 236 scientific publications (including peer-reviewed original manuscripts, editorials, letters, and chapters).
Dr. Gabriel has served on numerous editorial boards, NIH and AHCPR study sections and in leadership roles in both the Arthritis Foundation and the American College of Rheumatology. She is past President of the American College of Rheumatology.
Dr. Gabriel also has a strong commitment to clinical research education and career development. She serves as Co-PI and Director of Education for the NIH-funded Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science Activities (CTSA). Dr. Gabriel is a recipient of the Association for Clinical Research Training, Distinguished Educator Award, the McCann Scholar Award for Excellence in Mentoring in Medicine and Science, and the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award.
Dr. Gabriel has held many leadership positions at Mayo Clinic and is a recipient of the MacMillan Management Scholar Award. She was Chair of the Department of Health Sciences Research (>400 professionals in 3 divisions: Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Biomedical Informatics and Healthcare Policy & Research) from 2001 until 2007 when she was elected to the Executive Board (14 members overseeing all operations of Mayo Clinic in Rochester and the Mayo Health System). She is currently Medical Director, Office for Strategic Alliances, and Vice-Chair of the Mayo Clinic Business Development Council.
Dr. Gabriel is married to Dr. Frank R. Cockerill III, Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology and CEO of Mayo Medical Laboratories. They have two sons, Richard (21) and Matthew (19).
