Ian Bruce

Ian Bruce is Professor of Rheumatology at the arc Epidemiology Unit, School of Translational Medicine, University of Manchester and The Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology, Manchester Royal Infirmary. He qualified from Queen’s University Belfast in 1988 and obtained his MRCP in 1991. His initial rheumatology training was under the mentorship of Dr Aubrey Bell and he completed his MD thesis on systemic vasculitis in 1995.

From 1996-1998 he was a Lupus Fellow at the University of Toronto with Professors Murray Urowitz and Dafna Gladman. From 1998 to the present he has worked in Manchester.

His major clinical interest is connective tissue diseases and he has a large Lupus and Connective Tissue Disease clinic that was recently given Centre of Excellence status by Lupus UK. He is PI on several ongoing prospective studies within this cohort. His academic interest is in cardiovascular outcomes in rheumatic diseases especially SLE and RA. He is the principal investigator in a prospective study of subclinical atherosclerosis progression in SLE as well as the NOAR cardiovascular study a sub-study of the Norfolk Arthritis Registry.
