Prof. Mauro Galeazzi was borne in Rome-Italy in 04-03-1948, he graduated in Medicine in 1973, specialized in Rheumatology in 1977 and in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation in 1981. He was a Rheumatology fellow at St. Louis University (St Louis- MO- USA) from August 1977 to July 1978. He has performed his period of 15 months of military service, as Medical Officer, in the Italian Air Force (1974-1975). From 1975 to 1992 he worked in the Rheumatology Division of St. Camillo Hospital in Rome (Italy). From 1992 he has been working in the Institute of Rheumatology of Siena University as associated professor being responsible of the section for the “diagnosis and therapy of systemic connective tissue diseases” that has been recognized as a referring centre for these disorders from the Tuscany Region. From November – 01 - 2005 he has had the position of Full Professor of Rheumatology at Siena University that include the direction of the Rheumatology Unit.

Academic responsibilities

Prof. Mauro Galeazzi has been the President of the “Corso di Laurea per Infermieri” and is member of the “Senato Accademico” of Siena University since the 1st of November 2007. Responsible of the Rheumatology Session in the School of Doctorate in Biomedicine and Immunological Sciences and responsible of the Rheumatology Session in the Department of Internal Medicine and Immunological Sciences. He also is the Director of the School of Specialization in Rheumatology. Prof. Mauro Galeazzi is member of the American College of Rheumatology, of the Italian Society of Rheumatology and former member of the British Society of Rheumatology. He has also been the President of the Tuscany Section of the Italian Society of Rheumatology and of the Tuscany League Against the Rheumatism.

Research activities

Prof. Mauro Galeazzi has participated, also as coordinator, in many Italian and international polycentric research programs. In particular, from 1994 to 1997 he has coordinated a European research project on the “Immunogenetics of systemic lupus erythematosus” (ECAISLE) supported by the European Union (BIOMED 1). Prof. Galeazzi has participated in more than 100 national and international clinical trials and is currently involved in pharmacological trials especially for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis and fibromialgia. Most of the clinical trials have been performed according to ICH-GCP. Prof. Mauro Galeazzi has published over 300 scientific articles (185 in journals currently listed in PubMed) mainly dedicated to genetic, pathogenetic, clinical and therapeutic aspects of systemic autoimmune disorders, chronic poliarthritidis and autoinflammatory disorders.
