Ross Petty
Dr Petty was educated at the University of Sascatchewan, Saskatton, and completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Michigan. After a fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology with Dr Donita Sullivan and Dr James Cassidy in Ann Arbor, he studied at the University of London with Professor Michael Steward, receiving a PhD in Immunology. He has been on the faculties of the Departments of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan, University of Manitoba and University of British Columbia, where he is currently Professor, and an active member of the Division of Rheumatology at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital.
Dr Petty established programs in pediatric rheumatology at the University of Manitoba in 1976 and the University of British Columbia in 1979. He and his colleagues have supervised the training of more than thirty pediatric rheumatologists who now lead programs throughout the world. With colleagues, Dr Petty has written more than 200 original papers and book chapters, and co-edited the Textbook of Pediatric Rheumatology, now in its 6th edition. He has been a visiting lecturer on every continent and has an interest in children with rheumatic diseases in the developing world.
Dr Petty is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He has been the recipient of Distinguished Rheumatologist Awards of the Canadian Rheumatology Association, and the American College of Rheumatology, the Ross award of the Canadian Pediatric Society, and the James T Cassidy Award of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a Master of the American College of Rheumatology and in 2008 was appointed a member of the Order of Canada.
