Jaap Fransen is clinical epidemiologist and human movement scientist and works as a senior researcher and appointed junior primary investigator at the Department of Rheumatology of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

He is leading several junior researchers to their PhD and leads the departments’ data centre for trials and observational studies.

His research focus is on outcome research in arthritis, notably rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, and systemic sclerosis. Common to these disorders is that they are syndrome-type diseases: the underlying pathogenic process is insufficiently clear and cannot be catched by a single measure. Research interests are on diagnosis and screening, measurement of disease activity, and prognosis.

Jaap Fransen is member of the Committee for clinical affairs and committee for epidemiology of the EULAR Scleroderma Trials and Research group (EUSTAR), the ACR/EULAR committee on the development of classification criteria for Scleroderma, and the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA). Further, he is Associate editor of Arthritis Care & Research and has acted for years as epidemiologic advisor for the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
