Marc C. Hochberg, MD, MPH, received his M.D. and M.P.H. from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and School of Hygiene and Public Health.  He completed residency training in internal medicine and fellowship training in rheumatology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He was a member of the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine from 1977 to 1991.  He is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology & Public Health and Head, Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Hochberg received the Clinical Research Award from the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) in 1999, was named one of only 50 “Postdoctoral Fellow Heroes” by the Arthritis Foundation in 2001, and received the Mary Betty Stevens Clinical Research Award from the American College of Physicians (Maryland Chapter) in 2002 and the Roger Demers Prize at the 42nd Laurentian Conference of Rheumatology in 2011.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade/Initiative and was General Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors of OARSI, a member of the Board of Directors of both the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the ACR Research and Education Foundation, and Chair, Standing Committee on Epidemiology of the International League of Associations of Rheumatology.  He has published over 425 articles and 50 book chapters, and is an editor of the textbooks “Epidemiology of the Rheumatic Diseases, 2nd edition” (Oxford University Press, 2001), “Rheumatology, 5th edition” (Mosby/Elsevier, 2011) and “Rheumatoid Arthritis” (Mosby/Elsevier, 2009).  He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism.

Dr. Hochberg’s research focuses on the clinical epidemiology of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.  His research is funded primarily by the National Institutes of Health.
